WE NEED YOUR HELP. This is Our Ask.

We need to raise $45,000 by June 30, 2019, in order to keep our doors open. Without raising this amount, we will close our doors to our community for good by August.

We urgently need these funds to continue providing a safe, inspiring and inclusive community space for children and for our kids from high-need neighbourhoods who access our resources and attend more than 250 curated experiences, workshops and program sessions in a single year. We need these funds to be able to provide even more meaningful opportunities, expand personal networks of our youth and cheerlead them to reach their fullest potential by encouraging them to dream BIG!

We will also be able to welcome more children from communities in various neighbourhoods as well as mentor a great community of volunteers, host donation drives to resource our programs and other social service offices, jumble sales and co-create with our incredible partners. ANY little bit you can give to enable us to continue this vital work counts. In addition, we are pleased to offer a set of donor rewards for those who would like them. Every contribution to this campaign will receive an chance to have their name in a community lucky draw on 29th June, 2019! Please scroll below and please make sure to fill out the form so we have your information for your reward and to put it into the lucky draw!

The Kids and Community

If you mention 'Singapore' to friends and family living abroad, you would excitedly share about Marina Bay Sands, Orchard Road or your favourite spots to enjoy a great meal. Many groups of volunteers and guests to the organisation have always reacted in genuine surprise about the hidden poverty and challenges that exist in Singaporean neighbourhoods who are isolated from the support and benefits that many of us may take for granted. And it's not just poverty of basic needs, it's poverty of the mindset causing them to limit their dreams and aspirations. The situations are varied, however, most families share common ground with hardships that force one or both parents to work long hours, multiple jobs with their children spending most of their days alone without adult supervision and in isolation. For many they are faced with overwhelming barriers, prejudices and scepticism. Just coming from a different/complex background, sometimes a simple fix might be a privilege they can’t afford to experience.

What our kids need most is not only to have physical well-being, but emotional and mental well-being. This takes time to nurture, encourage and grow. What they need is opportunity to have agency, the opportunity to make their own free choices based on what they need.

Meet Alexandra*, when we first met her she was not excited about school and often chose to sleep at home or wander around her neighbourhood rather than attend classes. Fast forward a few years into our program and she had the opportunity to visit a global tech company for a private coding workshop using microbit, held in one of it's over-sized conference rooms, as well as a personal tour of the office. Before we even got started, Alexandra spoke up.

She called for attention after everyone was given their handouts and had what they needed to get started and said "Cher (which means 'teacher' in local terms)! I would love to work here one day! I think I can see myself working here when I'm older." Before we could respond, one of the other kids spoke up and said, "Don't be silly. Nobody like us ends up here. You think so easy one meh?" 😔

And that's the power of a community like ours because we can intervene during these conversations and long-held mindsets of what is possible and what isn't. We cheer-lead kids on when nobody may be cheering them on at home because there is no adult supervision, at school when teachers and their peers look at them as the trouble-makers or the slow-learners or in the wider community. Our program cheer-leads these kids no matter what path they choose or whether they've made a not-so-wise decision. We cheer them on in life with the belief that anything is possible and that in a moment like sitting in a global tech company's conference room means that someone like Alexandra is (literally) closer to getting to where she sees herself one day.

Our Programs

Through our Beyond Awesome program, we focus on developing the emotional intelligence, resilience, confidence and compassion of our kids, exposing them to meaningful experiences and a wider network of role models. This, we believe, helps them to realise and recognise their own potential and have excitement as they look towards the future.

We do not believe in ad-hoc or one-time only programming. We believe in deep and meaningful relationships that nurtures trust, develops bravery and celebrates the unique gifts and talents of each child who walks through our doors. Our volunteer community commits to serving with joy for a minimum of 6 months - with many staying on as they're able to bear witness and celebrate the 'small wins' that are made along the way.

We run weekly programming that can include meaningful experiences such as mindfulness, sport and outdoor activities, science, technology, art and more! We also provide once in a lifetime opportunities for our students to personally visit inspiring, innovative corporates and brands like Twitter, Microsoft and businesses based in Singapore that welcome our kids to take a peek behind-the-scenes and be able to spark curiosity in the world around them.

With 250 events, workshops and program sessions in a single year – we see kids develop a love for learning and their communities and contribute to the world in ways they had never dreamed they could.

Our Beyond Awesome HQ provides a safe, physical space for up to 40 kids, where they’re celebrated for who they are and where they’re at in life. It’s a second home away from home for many in our community - with some of the children journeying with us for the last 4 years. This space is also opened up to the wider community through our Jumble Sale events as well as opportunities for other kids in Singapore to learn alongside our group.

We also frequently resource and open our doors to our friends in the social sector in Singapore who need supplies, access to meaningful programming or simply want a safe and inspiring space to recommend to families under their care.

Children and youth from high-need communities attend our sessions at no cost. We do everything with careful intention, thoughtful planning and with the support of generous donors and highly qualified, experienced and passionate educators alongside incredible volunteers.

About

Founded in 2008 by Emily Teng, Blessings in a Bag is a globally recognised ground-up-initiative* that champions, inspires and advocates support for children and youth related causes through community, collaboration and collective action.

Through Blessings in a Bag, it has sparked a variety of engaging and inspiring programs and initiatives. Previously, it co-ordinated community groups across the Asia region to receive much-needed supplies through a network of travelers flying in and out of various destinations, sometimes carrying 100s of kilos worth of resources that were used as social incentives. See previous work done through this video. We currently no longer offer this program but we continue to be a resource space for communities and community partners that we journey with.

In 2014, the group pivoted to focus on challenges faced by local children and youth in Singapore and spoke to a number of social service agencies, social workers and those committed to the cause. It's latest program, Beyond Awesome, journeys with under-resourced children and youth through experiences that inspire them to dream beyond their current circumstances. Our mission is to cheerlead youth-at-risk to grow into resilient, compassionate and kind individuals who uplift their communities.
